INTRODUCTION

The Hasli is a rigid necklace from Southeast Asia that tapers towards the end, and rests on the collar. Examples of this type of necklace were seen as early as 300 BC and have evolved to currently inlcude precious stones and elaborate enamelling.

ETYMOLOGY

This type of necklace derives its name from the Hindi word 'hansuli' meaning 'collar bone'. It rests on the collarbone of the wearer.

The Hasli is also known as Hansuli, Hasli and Hansdi.

MATERIAL

The necklace is often made in silver and gold. The gold is more elaborate, often embellished with precious gems like rubies or turquoise and kundan.

ABOUT

The traditional Hasli is rigid and tapers towards the end in the form of a collar necklace. While some are symmetrical, others may have a pendant. Some also feature enamelling on the back.

HOW IT'S MADE

Traditionally, silver sheets and wires were heated and beaten into different designs, chain links, beads and coins. These are then welded together with a hand welding machine. An emery stone is used to finish the sharp edges of the sheet metal parts.

DESIGN

The Hasli's form is rigid, usually made of silver or gold. The designs can be minimal or they can feature elaborate inlay and enamel work. The necklace tapers towards the end, following the collar and some feature a pendant.

WORN BY

In India, Haslis are believed to have first been worn by the women of the Banjara community of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The community then migrated to different parts of the country including Telangana in the 14th century AD.

HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE

Examples of the torque necklace in copper and bronze were seen in Southeast Asia as early as 300 BC. They were also common across the world including Celtic cultures, parts of Africa and Asia dating around the 3rd-4th century AD.
