INTRODUCTION

Lokaparo is a necklace quintessential to an Assamese bridal trousseau. The necklace consists of a pendant featuring symmetrically placed pigeons back to back. Although traditionally meant for the bride as a signifier of marriage, today the necklace can be worn more casually, out of the bridal context.

ETYMOLOGY

‘Paro’ means pigeon, which refers to the central pigeon motif that hangs as a pendant. It is also a symbol of peace.

MOTIF

A pair of identical pigeons signify auspiciousness and good luck.

WORN BY

Traditionally, high profile male dignitaries of the Ahom dynasty wore the necklace. Today, it is part of the Ahomiya bride’s trousseau.

"The Juron ceremony takes place a day or two before the wedding. The groom's family (minus the groom) visit the bride's house and gift her jewellery and clothes. Lokaparo is one of the few traditional necklaces that is gifted. It may be worn by the bride on the day of the wedding although it is not compulsory. Often in plated gold with meenakari, gold, rubies, emeralds, kundan and polki.

DESIGN

The Lokaparo consists of a central pendant that features two identical pigeons that are symmetrically placed back to back. It can be enhanced with precious gems and sometimes it is enamelled.

MOTIFS & SIGNIFICANCE

The role of flora and fauna in Assamese everyday life is all pervading. Therefore, trees, leaves and birds are common motifs in traditional crafts. The Assamese Lokaparo is no exception where the pigeon is a symbol of peace.

SIGNIFICANCE
